what is the first thing you'll have done? How will universal healthcare benefit those you love?

I know I will go to the chiropractor first, I have insurance now but the copays for the visits are just not affordable. The headaches, neck pain and tendonitis in my wrists are painful and some days unbearable.

I know that I will be able to get all the medication that my child needs without worrying about how I'm going to afford it.

I know several people with mental health issues who do not take medication that would help them function in society because they can't afford it.

I know several elderly people who will be able to get the testing that they need and the correct medication. I also know one elderly person who is only working for health insurance who will be able to afford to retire.

How about you? I'm sure a lot of you know people who are struggling who could use help with their medical care.

pjlisa13- Not everyone can get a job that offers healthcare, there are a lot of employers who don't offer it because they can't afford it either. What do you expect them to do? They have nothing. Don't cry to me about 5 jobs, there was a time I worked 4 jobs and I couldn't keep it up physically or mentally, and I am paying the price now. I know affordable healthcare would relieve the stress of how folks are going to pay their medical bills and maybe they'll actually only need MAINTENANCE healthcare, how about THAT?

zaeli, you're right, but affordable healthcare should be available for all--we all get our own car insurance, don't we? Do we have to get it through our employers?

Hey political correctedness, thanks, but I have a life...I also have folks in my life who can't afford treatments that they need to take care of chronic conditions...obviously everyone in your life is healthy and wealthy. Try the heartbreak of having someone in your life who is refused life saving cancer treatments. It's happening all around you, you need to wake up and "get a life"

Wow dandls, why don't you tell me how you really feel? What the $#^& am I supposed to do about my arthritic wrists? Believe me, if I could afford the $80 weekly in copays I would go to the chiropracter NOW to pay for a medical condition that got EXACERBATED by the job that I do now...the place where I have my health insurance.

Why is everyone so negative about this? Did you read some of these answers?

Pink,
National Health Care is simple, it works and is a good system

Ignorance abounds regarding National Health aspects but essentially, forgetting all the misconceptions swallowed hook line n sinker by the generally uninformed American public, comparing it to Socialized Medicine such as in England and Canada ( a rumor started by the Republican Party to protect their financial backers, the Insurance Industry0, the system is very simple.

Everybody in the country pays into the system, it is managed by private insurance companies (not the government) and since the young generally do not require lots of medical procedure, when an older person needs something, they get it.
The young, who pay in and do not reap a lot of short term benefits will arrive soon enough to the age where they do and the youth of that time will be supporting the then current costs.

The youth of America with their typical contempt for the elderly will soon enough join that august body of citizens and then, they will, no doubt, have the foresight to want some affordable insurance, if for no other reason, for themselves. It is amazing just how open-minded self interest can cause someone to become.

Since the system does not allowed for CEO’s of the various Insurance Companies to make hundreds of millions each year, (as is currently the case in the USA), the money goes to paying benefits. Insurance Companies are not allowed to refuse treatment by declaring Cancer surgery, for example, to be…”experimental”.
That National Health takes the big profit out of the national insurance scam and directs it to benefits is considered a good thing by enlightened peoples and a horrible tragedy by insurance companies and their political lackeys.

I was “out of country” for a number of years and I chose to add “National Health Ins,” to my government medical benefits in Europe. It worked great and the longest I ever waited was about 15 minutes. Once I began using National HealthIt I never went back to Uncle Sam while over there. NHI was was a lot faster than going to Uncle Sam.

It was 8 years, not 4, and surprise, surprise, Mitt Romney is our best shot at universal health care, too bad he's not good for much else. Here in Massachusetts, under Romney, we got a universal health care of sorts. We have a policy now, anyone without health care gets penalized on their taxes at the end of the year, and the state has state issued health care, Masshealth, that anyone can get. It's based on your income, so if your broke, it's free, if you make good money, you have to pay for it. It's more complicated then that, but that's the gist of it.

You made good points in your question, but I have to object to the term 'HEALTH CARE'. The issue for the US is HEALTH INSURANCE. There's no way that this country is ever going to have a situation where the government runs hospitals and employs doctors as a general thing. The federal government (that is 'We the People) could institute a a NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE policy that would cover all Americans. Like any other insurance it would still have some co-pays and deductables, but not enough to discourage people from getting needed treatment. I doubt if it would be a perfect system, but it could be perfected. Our current employer based health insurance system is rapidly going the way of the buffalo...it's going to have to be replaced and a system of tax based HEALTH INSURANCE is the only real answer.

National health care would be nice but as always we would have people abusing the system. I understand that people have problems but to go to a chiropractor I don't think that should be covered and that is only my personal opinion. Our medical system will be so swamped with people wanting to do things that they don't need. The people that need help will not be able to get in. I am not saying we do not need this all I am saying is it would need to come with a lot of guide lines. The real problem is the cost to go to the hospital and doctors office. If you really wanted to do something the government will need to purchase these places and take over. They are over charging for everything that they do and keep you coming back for everything. Once you are there you will have follow up appointments and follow up appointments for the follow ups. The failure is in the hands of the doctors and hospitals this is why insurance companies need to keep charging us more. People need to stop going to the doctor for a cold or flu ride it out that is what we used to do. I do agree that some people do need help and I am all for helping these people as long as they are American citizens. I would not go unless I was really sick sorry but that is my feelings on this question. I suggest you really think about what you asked and what you are going to have done.

I know universal health care sounds good , and you'll want to go get help . But think about it , how hard is it now to get an appointment , like 3weeks right ? If health care is free, about 500,000,000 other people are going to go to the chiropractor too . You'll wait years to get in , the same with hospital visits . What if you need a Ct scan or MRI . Since its free millions of people are going to want them . Putting you on a list , a list where you'll wait months to years to get the scan done . Medication well be free , but they wont be the good kind you want . Do you think these pharmaceutical company's are going to give us the good stuff because its free . Hell no they want to get paid . Well get crap meds . One more thing , you think our taxes are bad now , try paying health care for a little under 1 billion people . Oh yea , sorry I know I'm being negative about it , I just don't think it well work , lastly , all our doctors now are making good money , deservingly of course . Universal health care means cheaper health care, means docs get payed crap . They well leave this country and work else where, well get doctors from India , Philippines , Iraq . Any one that well work here for dirt pay . So we well have crappy docs . Sorry

I too know alot of decent people who 'fall thru the cracks' and aren't able to get health insurance, for a number of different reasons.

I don't think that health care should be free, but it should at least be affordable and accessible.

The insurance companies are just worthless 'middlemen' who are driving up the costs for everyone.

Be ready to wait...and wait....and wait, Universal health will suck. It is not working well in the places that now have it, Why do you think some of those people come to the USA to have medical procedures done? They get tired of long waits that could result in life threatening situations. And it will not cost less....in the long run you will pay more......big taxes. Your choice of doctors will drop because doctors will not want to work for the wages the government wants to pay. I am against Universal health care it is just a smoke screen to make people think they will have good medical care but you will see that will not be the case.

Yes health care should be affordable to all but the way to handle that is to hold our government responsible for letting the insurance companies take control and set their own limits. We don't need Universal health care to do that. Universal care would send us into an even bigger dive then we are now.

I don't know where you live but....My sister just went through cancer treatment and she could not offord it. She was still treated. There are services out there where people with things like cancer can go when they don't have the money. There were a couple of places that helped with her expenses. I, Myself am a cancer survivor, I had it when I was a teenager and there were places that helped with my treatment, Crippeled childrens society was one. So please do your homework first. Most people can find agencies that will help with things like cancer treatment, We don't need Universal health for that, If anything I can see these treatment declining when we let the government decide when, where and what type of treatment we need!

I just posted a question about this subject. Please go read it, It seems that medication is not covered, Please be careful what you vote for. one of the very things you are looking for is the medication and it is not offered in Universal care!

From what I am seeing on the question I asked from Canadians, They are still having to carry private health insurance with their jobs to cover what Universal care does not cover, I just can't see where they are benefitting from it!

I wouldn't hold my breath. Our nation needs universal healthcare, but the democrats and the republicans are not going to give it too us. Why? Because they are bought and paid for by the special interests, namely the drug and health industries.

You want universal health care? Marry a canadian. Thats the only way you or your family is going to see it in the next 20 years.

I'm not really sure exactly what the unversal health care will cover but I hear a lot of comparisons to Canadas health care system. What you may not realize however, is that in Canada, the social medicine does not cover:

Chiroprators (unless prescribed by your doctor)

Eyeglasses (or eye tests)

Prescription meds for you or your children (unless you are on welfare)

Medical aids (walkers, wheelchairs, etc...)

Most people in Canada still have to have private health insurance to cover most things. The social medicine really only covers emergency medical treatment or treatment for things like cancer, HIV, kidney disease, etc...
