I think because they have no faith in the system, and have a dim outlook about the future. It is a way to make them fit into a society that they don't like!
Plus, hey, some of the clothes are cute, and you never have to worry about getting skin cancer from tanning!

Why do you choose to wear the clothes you do or listen to the music you listen to?
It's all about finding an identity. But, it's also about protection. A lot of kids who feel they are on the outskirts of social acceptability choose to throw it in societies face rather than take it lying down. Wrapping yourself in black, having a "**** you" attitude and indulging in the strange is soothing for people who don't like to be "top 40".
It's not wrong and neither is being trendy or classic. The outside is usually a phase for all of us.
But, it certainly is fun to play around with.
