Dell and HP keep fighting for the #1 spot. Right now I think it's HP (according to the news). Again, they are so close it keeps changing each quarter.
Personally I would be quite content owning either. Dell has proven to be a great machine and thier quality (contrary to what some will say) is pretty good. HP's are nice little boxes as well and I've never had any issues with them (tech support has always been decent to deal with as well).
At that point there, it's a user's preference between what you like for features between the two. (or even just how it physically looks).
IBM has gone downhill since Lenovo took over thier laptops. Acer is ok, I like their Ferrari line but thats about it. There are many others out there, but I'd still have to say Dell or HP.
Oh.. Sony makes a nifty laptop as well -- but you are usually going to pay a premium for all the little extras they like to toss in.

Lenovo, a great laptop. HP's are also popular but don't go near Dell, even though many people might have them. Their computers are just lower quality and my dell is not doing so well at the moment...
