Check to see if the linkage is moving the transmission lever through the full range of gears. If that's ok, it's an internal problem and the trans will have to be rebuilt.

if it's an automatic check the linkage on the the transmission i bet a bolt came loose

Evidently the transmission was never serviced or not serviced for several thousand miles.

It may need rebuilt.

chances are you missed its service date at XXX,XXX miles. there isn't a lot you can do about it. its going to cost lots of money unless you do the work yourself. my guess is that it is a ford? requesting more information please...
