I'm the same way... I'm much too shy (I think I have a social anxiety disorder....) so I've always been more comfortable making online friends. I have more friends on the computer than I do in real life- and I'm from a small town as well. Some of them I've been chatting with for years, and so I truly count them as friends.
I think that people like us arent doing ourselves a favor by shutting out the outside world and avoiding trying to make friends, but I know how hard it can be. So I can identify with you there :P

I meet people by greeting them and being friendly. Here are some ways of making friends off the internet.
1: Getting to know them better
2: Hanging out with them
3: Saying Hi.
And, it's OK if you just have friends online, that's not a bad thing, but you never know what some of those people on the internet really are, so you have to be cautious, but otherwise it's fine just talking to them.

its not a bad thing to meet some friends online
not at all.[as long as you sure they are not lying to you about their identity]
but its also nice to meet friends outside of the internet.
how?
well you didnt include your age but ill answer for various ages just incase.
*find interest with someone in your school.[highschool colleage w.e] if they are taking the same classes and if they seem interesting just calmly approach and introduce your self to start a nice converstation. then see where it goes from there.
*bars, clubs, caffes people go to these places alot of the times specificly to meet people.
*work if you work with them and see them everyday have no shame inb forming a friendship with them if you find interest.

I think its totally fine, as long as you have someone to talk to all the time, just so you don't feel lonely every day.
sometimes having real life friends doesn't meant they are any better than online ones.
