If it's a betta he could be blowing a bubble nest. They do this to keep the eggs in when they mate but don't attempt to mate them unless you have lots of experience and know what you are doing.

I'll throw out a few possibilities:
* If your fish is a male betta, it could be a bubble nest. Gourami and paradise fish make bubblenests as well.
* This can be caused by some brands of water conditioner (dechlorinator).
* If it's been a while since you've done a water change, dissolved organic material may cause this.
You don't say what type of fish you have, but no fish really thrives in a bowl. Golfish will get 8-18+ inches long, and need far more space to grow. Bettas are tropical fish and should have a heater - their water temperature should be 76-86oF. For a betta, a 1 gallon tank would be the very minimum to keep one long-term, and a 2.5 or 5 gallon would be even better. For a goldfish, you should allow a minimum of 10-20 gallons per fish, depending on the variety.

well there are two possible answers. One is that you may have some type of soapy residue in your bowl, which if it were the case your fish wouldn't be alive. Or two you have a Betta or Siamese Fighting fish. These fish belong to a family of fish were the males construct bubble nests when they are breeding age. This what the eggs would be placed in if they bred. So I'm thinking most likely it's number two for you.

A variety of reasons, probably because the water is becoming foul and needs to be changed.
Do a 50% water change, where you remove half of the old water and replace it. Be sure to add the necessary Anti-Chlorine/Chloramine chems BEFORE you add it to the tank. Any good pet shop w/ fish will have the chems.
Also, depending upon how big the bowl is, you might want to buy a small filter for it. The fish will be happier!!!

Well, bettas do that to make bubble nests. My fish did that when it first arrived here, but after a while it stopped

my sis wondered about that~ she has a male betta. Then she asked at a fish store & they told her it's because he is trying to breed... I don't know much but I could see that being a good explantion. He's trying to fertilize eggs if there were any~

if you have a betta this is a bubble nest. every male in breeding condition makes them. however this does not mean you should breed him! it just means he's happy and healthy enough to breed. he'll continue to be this way even if you don't breed him.
if you really wish to breed them please don't jump into it, read up on it first. lots and lots of research!
