After an exhausting two day climb, the seeker gained the mountain top and stood before the Hermit. "I am told," He said, "That you are the Wisest Man in the World." The Sage pondered briefly and lifting his arm to point to the East said, "Nope. He's on that mountain over there."

After the Seeker had gone, the Student emerged from the cave and asked, "Master, that poor man spent two days climbing the mountain to see you. Why did you send him away?"

"I did not send him away. I told him that what he sought was elsewhere. He will not find it here. You endured the same ordeal. Said the same thing to me and got the same reply. Yet you stayed. Why?"

The student set his jaw and said, "Because after spending two days climbing up here, I wasn't going to leave until you taught me SOMETHING!!!" After a pause, he said. "Oh."

I'm sure there's a deep insight in your answer, Qball--but I couldn't find it.

Good point, Raji. Just like in RPG's where are the wagon trains bringing in food for all of those monsters in the dungeon.

What I( want to know is this. At the top of EVERY desolate mountain type story is an old, wise man. the question is, WHAT does he eat, drink and more importantly, WHERE does he shower and take a dump?

Wisdom lies in the search, not in the finding.

If the student's plan was to stay until the hermit taught him "something", and he is STILL there, then what the hermit said must be true. He isn't wise, and can give no wisdom to the seeker.

If you wish to find meaning in your life, you have to create the meaning by yourself. Both the seeker and the student have a lot to learn. The hermit is either delusional or a fraud, just like all the rest of the gurus.

Wise is the man who realizes how little he knows.

it means that that's what the wise man wanted to teach; that to find the answer to something you have to be persistent and patient.

It tells me that a lot of people who seek high places are utter morons.
