Mental for sure. Bruises and cuts will heal the mental part takes much longer and is much harder to heal.

Both forms of abuse are humiliating and degrading. I think in the long term mental abuse is worse for you as it can leave deep-seated & hard-to-heal scarring. It is certainly harder to recognize, and therefore harder to recover from.

Mental abuse typically alternates with declarations of love and statements that they will change, providing a "hook" to keep the other person in the relationship.

This is not to say that physical abuse is not a horrible occurance. It is, and anyone who is involved in a situation where they are a victim of this should remove themselves from the situation if at all possible. Physical abuse is often the escalation of mental abuse, especially when a stressful situation occurs.

Hopefully this will help. A very good website to look at is: www.recovery-man.com

Physical abuse is worse of the two, with mental abuse you still have choice and when one trained his/her mind, words have no power over you, like the saying No one can hurt you without your consent. But with physical abuse, you don't have much of a choice, when someone beat you up you get hurt and feel helpless and it will also affect you mentally. Physical abuse is actually physical plus mental and emotional abuse. As long as you still have a choice, you're still in control.

Mental abuse. The way I think about it is that cuts and bruises heal over time but the mental trauma of being beaten or just even emotionally abused is just so hard to get over. It's effects can be felt even generations down the line. It's a phenomenally destructive thing and by far the worse of the two.

I was both mentally and physically abused by my ex-boyfriend for 9 years. I would have to say the mental abuse was the worst. The physical abused healed quickly but the mental abuse took allot of time to heal.

Mental

Mental should be worse because it's not so obvious so people can be victim to it without even realizing it so it can last for years and really scare you for life.

Physical...it hurts, you get bruised and then you heal.

Sometimes, physical abuse will affect your mental state...like when your father hit you with his belt and 30 or 50 years later, you do not have the bruises anymore but you still have the nightmares and the hatred.

Mental abuse!!! With physical abuse there is outwards evidence and a better chance that people will reach out to help you, the abuse is obvious. With mental abuse, they are playing games in your head, saying things that will kill your spirit and render you broken internally, there is no evidence and people on the outside can not easily distinguish those who are abused mentally and you generally will not get out or get help that is needed. Interesting question...

mental and physical abuse are both worse, but in my opinion mental is far worse, whereas physical abuse the scars can heal and can never be seen again, but whereas mental abuse is concern it can leave terrible and horrifying images, scars and provoke bad memories and can leave the victim to either seek help for a long time, commit suicide or even become a psychopath in the future

Enough physical abuse will turn in to mental abuse anyway...
And if I have to pick one (which I think is pretty hard), I will say mental abuse - physical abuse is often easier to heal
