My friend has the Bose speaker for his iPod and it has fantastic sound but it's quite costly $299
there are cheaper ones but the quality is best on Bose. you have to plug it in to use it and you can't use it with batteries. so you may try and get one that's great quality for your home and another speakers for when you go camping. I posted the link below for the Bose speakers :)
hope this helps

Do not go for Bose because they do not have any portable model as of now, You might want to look at
Altec Lansing im600 ($150), it is one of the thinnest speaker/dock for the iPod, it also sounds better than most of its competition, has an FM tuner, and rechargeable battery.
Altec Lansin im9 ($150), it has a rubber casing so it is very rugged and durable.
Harman/Kardon Go+Play ($350) is the best looking iPod boom box ever created, it out performs Bose, it both good to look at and to listen to

Bose! Absolutely awesome quality sound, plenty of volume and an amazing amount of bass from such a small unit. They're not battery powered, battery power ones are gonna be useless for house parties as they won't have the volume or sound quality.
just check out the reviews -

here are some choices. i use my ipod or fm transmitter to pump sound thru my surround sound system during parties or i take a radio with the adapter and put it outside... the sound is great for parties.
even better if you get the ones with a remote to control the song selections
