Well just a difference of spelling..OS & LINUX .. You probably use WINDOWS...right ? Anyways..

-- OS (Operating System) An interface between an END-USER and HARDWARE.
-- Windows is an OS, Windows has different Versions like 95 / 98 / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / VISTA
-- Windows is for some $$, you have to pay to get it, If you haven't that really BAD :)

-- LINUX is an OS too. It was developed by Linus Torvalds, something similar to Windows:Bill Gates::Linux:Linus Torvalds
-- Linux is FREE, you don't have to pay to use it.

-- Few people think it's quite difficult to use Linux, coz there's NO Support for it, so in other words MicroSoft takes money for support, NOW you get it..

-- If you really want to try Linux go for ZENWALK, a really easy to use linux only 480 MB of download and then you can use it without risking your existing Data.

-- If you have any problems regarding linux, give me a BuZz.!!

Rather the same as the difference between "car" and "Ford Focus".

Linux *is* an OS.

linux is a free operating system. Most of them are completely free. There are many distro's. I find ubuntu the best one and most pleasing overal experience. There are no viruses (in the wild) for linux and you can't get spyware. On windows and mac computers that's not the case. That also mean you don't need the anti virus and anti spyware program running in the background, so those don't slow down your pc. Ubuntu runs smoothly on most systems (not as heavy as windows or apple) and most drivers are detected and installed on install.
The visual aspect of ubuntu (7.04 feisty fawn) is pleasing. A video of a ubuntu with beryl:

However some windows application can't be found for linux. There is a program called wine for that problem, not always as good, but it works.

The add/remove software and synaptic is a very usefull way to download software (all free), you just enter a name or browse to the software and ubuntu
will download and install it with one click.

You can run ubuntu from cd, with internet acces withouth having to install anything.
