Hi, i have a 94 Chevy 1500 4x4 and it is burning coolant. I havent checked to see whether its the head gasket or its a cracked head, but its leaking a little bit of oil in between the head and the block. What do you think it is?

With the white smoke and antifreeze smell you have a 50/50 on head or head gasket.
You wont know for sure until you have the head checked.

As to the oil leak it depends on many factors.
You stated 94 1500 4X4 but what is the motor size and style, what is the mileage on the motor?
Some motors have an inherent problem with a minor oil leaks that you could not solve with a diaper, fix them and they come right back in a few months.

1 scenario
If we are talking about a in line six cylinder with high mileage I would say suspect Blow by.
Where V8 will burn oil when the rings are worn a in line 6 will allow the hot gasses to slip past the rings and pressurize in inner motor and in effect pressurize the oil out past the seals and gaskets.

2 scenario
Any motor style 6 or 8 did the motor over heat before the oil leak and or white smoke and antifreeze smell started?
When a motor overheats it can warp the head, crack the head, or blow a head gasket.
But also the excessive heat on any motor can damage and or destroy all seals and gaskets resulting in a leak of oil.

I would take the 4X4 to a car wash and steam clean the motor so you can see where the oil is coming from.
You have a front and rear seal and pan and valve gaskets that are the most vulnerable to heat and wear.

You have pretty much answered your own question. The head gasket is probably the problem. The oil leak could possibly be leaking also from the head gasket but more likely the valve covers. Don't forget to check the intake gasket also.

How do you know it's burning coolant??? Is there white smoke from the exhaust? or you just can't find a leak. If you have white smoke then the head gasket is leaking adnthe heads will have to be removed and if you can't tell where on the gasket it's leaking, then have the heads checked.

If it's BURNING coolant it would produce white smoke, stink like antifreeze, & exhaust pipe would have a gummy residue. In some cases you would actually see the coolant.
Remove the spark plugs & inspect. The effected cylinder will have a fouled plug. While the plugs are out have someone crank over the engine. If the leak is bad, the coolant will spray out the plug port. If it's still not visable perform a compression test.

Ok you say its burning coolant is there any leaks? Form the water pump or thermostat? If not then I say look for leaks around the head gasket.

Sounds like a bad head gasket... or cracked head / block. You can do a compression check and see if it holds. I would say its time for a new 4x4.
