suicide is a sin bla bla bla. He is a saint, not christian saint, he is a rock god who walked on earth.

Only God can make a saint. Earthly reverence or veneration for a person may suggest someone is having an impact beyond the ordinary human standards we use. However to become a saint one must find an identification with God and practice this to a heroic degree. Did Kurt Cobain do so? This needs to be explored and explained. In the meanwhile, just enjoy the pleasure of his music and value it for what it might do in your life. Making him a saint would probably not do anything more for you than is already taking place.

Nirvana was a movement in itself. Every time I see a Nirvana was overrated type of question I answer it trying to explain why they were so brilliant.
With that said, even in the sense of hyperbole I will never anoint Kurt Cobain a saint, rock god, or otherwise. As amazing as Nirvana was, aside from what THEY left behind, their music, they pretty much created the current ugly face of rock music. They left a generation of people who tried to duplicate what they did and failed miserably. The grunge movement was an amazing 5 years or so. I love the music it produced, but it made this whole angry rock movement commercially viable, thus making it trite and insincere. Nevermind gave us Green Day and Blink as commercialized monsters (for the record I don't necessarily blame them), thus killing punk rock. Alternative rock became mainstream rock, which was a really awesome thing in principle until the after affects became apparent, a total watering down.
As much as I respect Nirvana, they killed the somewhat exposed underbelly of rock and roll and it will take years to recover from it. So even in this more metaphorical sense I cannot sign off on it. Saints leave good things behind in their wake. Nirvana did not.
I also agree with the more literal arguments. I will not even try to understand what he went through in his life. Battling addiction, becoming what he hated and wrestling with his fame. I cannot elevate him based on his actions morally. I don't condemn him for it because like I said I have absolutely no idea what it was like to be him, but I wouldn't call him a role model, much less a saint. He was a drug addict and his child is now fatherless at his own hands, and I think that is terribly selfish regardless of the circumstances.

The guy played four chord songs at the right moment in time, and you think he should be canonized? What about Andrew Wood? That man IS a saint, and if you don't know who he is then you don't deserve to listen to Nirvana or even ask questions like this. Without Andrew Wood, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and all grunge would have never been what it is today. Cobain, far from saint. More like "pop star" if you ask me.

A saint for what???
I could understand that Nirvina Made it big when the came out and killed the hair bands. But I wouldnt call him a saint or a god! Alot of people do consider him that.....but I have to disagree. He was a great guitar player and song writer but his death only boosted him up even more for the fact of how tragic he died.....if he would've still been alive I dont think he would still be considered one of the best like he is today.
Everyone also calls Jim Morrison a god and that he was ahead of his time and blah, blah, blah...but I think he was overrated. People forget that he was a UCLA graduate and that the guy was on goddamn drugs. Anyone with a mind like that and on drugs could make poetry like he did....but his death only made him a god that everyone considers him!
Just my 2cents!

Oh, sure. Mother Theresa, The Pope, and Kurt Cobain. Makes perfectly good sense to me. Aside from that part about being a hopeless drug addict and committing a horrible suicide while having a young daughter who could have used a father figure in her life. Seriously, Kurt was not an evil guy other than to himself but what on earth qualifies him for sainthood? He played guitar, so what?

I've been a Nirvana fan since 'Nevermind' came out back in 1991, and think that he was a very talented musician/songwriter etc - but that's not a reason to become a saint. It's not something he would have wanted either.

Saints have to do with religion, but if we had to pick something, he would be the saint of mediocrity....teaching millions of young impressionable youth that you could make millions with no musical talent at all, making anyone a guitar god!

Admire him and hold him in your highest esteem, but please do not equate the tragic genius of Kurt Cobain with Christian dogmatic martyrdom. Its just tacky.
Just like those horrible Doc Marten ads.
