I live in the DC area, and, find many, many, people of various party affiliations, quite well informed, hard working, well educated, and who truly care about their country.

No, just a major center. It's easy to be nationalcentric, but the USA does not have a corner on the market for evil, ignorance, and greed, never has. I understand that the neighbors of folks who became concentration camp guards for Nazi Germany were characterized as "good neighbors" and "good parents", but being given life or death power over others seems to do bad things to most folks. Not all, but enough to see a bad trend! I would agree that we now in the USA do not measure up to our grandparents' "Greatest Generation", but they were grown in the fire of the Depression, low-tech and social support, and moved into the war years fairly slowly - whereas nothing is slow now! I hope we can handle it when crisis comes, because the USA is still the best deal in the world. I've been to a LOT of other countries, and the USA is the best in my book, offering freedom and opportunity far beyond anywhere else I've been or read about.

Notice the ease with which millions of Americans who serve in government are called Part of the Conspiracy and Evil, and Ignorant, and Greedy...
...by someone who has no experience in government.
Like kibbitzers in a park complaining about how the board game players can't jump properly, don't king their pieces correctly and keep moving the pieces wrong and inconsistently, some people will always see government as corrupt because they don't get what they want (read his other posts).
The sane and informed players keep playing, though. Chess is an important game.
