My favorite field athlete of the recent era who just retired in August, 2006 winning a Bronze Medal at the European championships at the age of 40 with his final competition being in September, 2006 at an exhibition in his home country of the Czech Republic where his javelin career started and ended.

Four Olympic Medals including three Gold Medals in the javelin:

1) 1988 Silver Medal, Seoul, Korea Summer Olympics
2) 1992 Gold Medal, Barcelona, Spain Summer Olympics
3) 1996 Gold Medal, Atlanta, USA Summer Olympics
4) 2000 Gold Medal, Sydney, Australia Summer Olympics

Five medals, three Gold, at the world championships:

1) 1987 Bronze Medal, Rome, Italy
2) 1993 Gold Medal, Stuttgart, Germany
3) 1995 Gold Medal, Gotthenburg, Sweden (the place of his last official competition in August, 2006)
4) 1999 Bronze Medal, Seville, Spain
5) 2001 Gold Medal, Edmonton, Canada

Jan Zelezny is the world record holder in the javelin at 98.48 meters set in 1996

Jan Zelezny is the Olympic record holder in the javelin at 90.17 meters at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Jan Zelezny has dominated the javelin as far as distance having thrown over 90 meters in competition well over fifty times which is many more times over 90 meters than everyone else in the world combined, plus, he is the only person to have ever thrown further than 94 meters still in 2007. That is what I call dominance.

A number of reasons why I liked Jan Zelezny was not only he was an excellent competitor for years on the world and Olympics stage, but he was self coached throughout his prime. I like an athlete who believes in himself and can figure out everything on his own and still be a major success in his 19 years of medalling at major European, World, and Olympics events.

And, he was self coached. If you are the best by far in your event, you don't need a coach telling you how to do it.
