The root cause of terrorism is capitalism.
As Lenin pointed out nearly a century ago, imperialism is the highest form of capitalism. The constant growth that capitalism requires, combined with the competition between capitalists demands that the capitalists fight continuing battles over natural resources and access to markets.
The supposed religious leaders in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc. are not really interested in promoting war over their religious differences any more than the Christians were during the Crusades. The goal back then and today is one and the same. The religious leaders attempt to rally their followers to do battle on their behalf by making a religious call, but all the while seeking more power and wealth for themselves.
That same action is at work within the imperialist power itself. The imperialist leaders tell the public they are being attacked and point out who is attacking them. Then they rally the public to go to war for "democracy" or to "get them before they get us." Many members of the public will naively believe the propaganda even as they see big oil investors take political power and attack oil-rich nations.
Capitalism demands imperialism and imperialism demands war. The less-powerful, regional capitalists resort to terrorism to promote their own interests. Only a global socialist movement uniting the interests of the world's working class people will bring an end to war and terrorism.

It all depends on which 'terrorism' you are talking about. 'Terrorism' is an over-used catch phrase and you can't have a 'war on terror' because 'terror' is a feeling or a state of mind and you can't fight a feeling or state of mind with combat.
All war is waged to terrorize an enemy in hopes that the enemy will surrender. In WW II the Germans in the battle of Britain bombed London to terrorize the civilian populace. In turn, the British and US bombed German cities that had no military value. The Japanese terrorized captured enemy soldiers with torture and death marches.
If you are talking about current conflicts and suicide bombers and the like, this is how a political group fights a more powerful foe. The western powers and Israel have large and powerful armies. The Palestinians and Islamic groups have no such thing. They fight to further there aims with what they have. There seems to be plenty of people willing to strap explosives on themselves to further the cause.
If you are asking about what is the root cause of the current middle-eastern conflicts, I would say it is the creation of Israel and US imperialistic hegemony.

Terrorism is usually done by those who don't have the necessary firepower to face the one's dominating them, for instance the Irish republican army could not face the British in battle because they don't have the tanks and boats as well as the Islamic people who want us to get out of their lands, they can not fight us face to face because they don't have the necessary firepower so they use terrorism to try and accomplish their goals. It was the same during the revolution here in our country, the British had much more firepower so we had to shoot from the woods and snipe their commanding officers which they thought was terrorism and it was terrifying because they wanted to line up and march at each other like gentlemen but we didn't have the firepower at first so we had to terrorize them. So it might depend on which side you are as to wether its considered terrorism or not.

i agree with jungon, desperation. it's easy to blame Iraq, Iran etc., since the Iraqi people have been gloriously freed from the terrible lives they had before we came and since we have now restored peace and joy to their streets. (arent we great).
terrorism as we call it, is the only way some people can fight back, it's like david and goliath. if you know the story. it wasn't a fair fight, with goliath being much bigger, stronger and battle hardened than the very young david. only for david had a slingshot he could not have beaten goliath. there's no point of these countries agreeing to the rules of warfare with america etc., for they cannot win, so they change the rules and we call it terrorism. TERRORISM the word itself strikes fear into the heart.
don't be fooled by the word or the other one for even george washington and many others who are now regarded as great people were once called terrorists.

Terrorism, as defined by the FBI, is "the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives."
Terrorism is caused oppression or fear of oppression. Palestinians engage in terrorism against Israel because they are being oppressed. Al Queda engages in terrorism against the US because they feel we are oppressing the radical agenda of Muslims. Insurgents in Iraq engage in terrorism because they feel we are oppressing the Iraqi right to self-determination.
Terrorism is a tactic that we (America) have used also. We use it to oppress though, and not because we are oppressed.
A good example of this is the 1986 bombing of Libya, which is listed by the UN's Committee on the Legal Definition of Terrorism as a "classic case" of terrorism  on a short list that includes the bombing of PAN AM 103, the first attempt made on the World Trade Center, and the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building.
We cannot hope to win a war against a tactic that we, ourselves, employ. "Shock and Awe" was a perfect example. It was the unlawful (per the UN and international law) use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce (or overthrow) a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives."

terrorist have been around for a long time now and dates back to biblical times, even George Washington was called a terrorist and rebel and the English would have hung him had they caught him, terrorist are made when a over powering group or country imposes its rule over another weaker country or people, especially when the people have no chance to fight back in a organized fashion, such as the Palestinians against Israel, who drove them out of their homes , businesses etc, yet they can not attack with a frontal assault as they would be wiped out by such more advanced weaponry Israel has, "supplied by the U,S,"needless to say that makes us a enemy also , and in many cases even worse than Israel, these people don't hate us because of our wealth , freedom, religion, or any thing other than our unconditional support of Israel they couldn't care less about any thing else this is a propaganda ploy by our ever trusting Zionist press ,

When it comes to terrorism from the Islamics, what I am about to write is unpopular and rejected by the left because it is the way it is. J Falwell got into some trouble for pointing out that among traditional cultures(Islamics) our policy of legal abortion, gay rights(in some cases the codification of gay marriage) women's rights(allowing women to drive a car, have a job, go to school, chose a husband) tolerance of many religions, free press(the right to blaspheme) are what causes these barbarians to hate us. The left always prattles on about poverty(then explain the doctors in Britain, or the fact that UBL leeks money) or Israel(yet al-quada has never struck there) To admit that just by going about our daily lives places us at odds with and at war with traditional Muslims would cause the left to either join the fight against traditional Islam or give up all the rights they claim to hold so dear, throw bed sheets over the heads of their wives, take their daughters out of school(perhaps preform some genital mutilation on them just to show their sincerity for peace) and bow to Mecca 5 times a day. I know it flies in the face of leftist doctrine but the west is not at fault in the creation of terrorists from the Muslim world. Listen to the catholic Pope, he has a good handle on the situation, and watch how the liberal media will Denie, ridicule, and shout down the truths he tells

Radical, fundamentalist militants view on religion, mostly Islamic. Violence in the name of Islam is sanctioned in the Koran and by the example of warlord Mohammed who founded Islam.
Also, the suppression of an ethnic group by a conquering invader sparks a lot of terrorism, as has happened in Spain, Northern Ireland, and Kurdistan.
