I would say 9/10 dont even know why it failed, practical and theoretically, only that we just got out of the Cold War and it was the "enemy."
I admit that I dont know much either but I dont go throwing around words that I dont know.

waycar111 - Its slightly inaccurate. A fascist voting for the republicans wouldnt make the republicans fascist.

It means they're a fascist.

Communism is, in a sense, the perfect government--except for the fact that leaders tend to take over all power rather than serve the people. When a single person has control of an entire government, they can become greedy incredibly easy and turn the country into a totalitarianism. Truly, at this point, the government is not a true communism any more, but rather a another form of dictatorship which is only nominally communistic. Historically, the dictatorships that have evolved out of communisms have been so bad that the people rebel and overthrow the government or the country collapses from one or more of the myriad issues that face a totalitarianistic rule. Communists preach the eventuality of every government turning to communism, but in reality, the truth is that every communism will fail. The root of the problem is people. Sometime, someone will come into power in a Communism and take over. It is human nature to be greedy, and human nature doesn't allow for successful communism.
I also think 99% of the people who label someone a communist to insult them know nothing about what I just wrote. To most people, all it is is an insult, because communism was our global enemy in the Cold War.
By the way, we were in the Cold War for almost 50 years, not 10.
Oops, I didn't really answer the question. I think for most people, it means they're ignorant and for a few people it means they know a good deal about communism.

The Communist party USA http://www.cpusa.org did not field a candidate int the 2004 election. They endorsed Kerry/Edwards.
They are behind the Democrats for 2008 as well. The very first article in the above link says so. Here is their party platform:
http://cpusa.org/article/archive/9/ How is what they stand for any different than what the Democrats are pushing for? When I call a democrat a communist, it' not an insult, it's called being accurate. In fact,I have more respect for the Communists. at least they are honest about who they are.
As far as the difference between communism-socialism, If you read the communist website, their plan is to implement socialist policies in increments. For the last 40 years, they been doing a hell of a job.
To those of you who will push the thumbs down button. Have some courage, click on the links above and tell me you don't agree with every word on them. So did you read the links? or push the thumbs down and go on being ignorant?
leikevey, there is nothing inaccurate in my answer. I didn't author the communist website. it's right there.
name calling. whatever. In this day and age if you see quacking feathered creature with web feet and can fly and swim, don't call it a duck. that would be name calling.

Its in the dictionary along with totalitarian, dictatorship, socialist, republic, democracy.
I agree, most don't know, that is why even intelligent people still call China communist while knowing they are Wal-Marting us to death.
Some are even calling a certain politician socialist and yet I doubt if they know what it means, except its a B--A--A--A--D word. Kinds of sounds like the sound a sheep makes. Fits.

We fought a war 10 years against "communism" yet most of the american people could not even define the word.
In the "mindless USA" a communist is someone that disagrees with John Wayne

communism, in its various forms, has never worked anywhere.
China was the closest thing to communism however their economy is getting more capitalist every year.
Socialism is similar to communism but each social program (healthcare, jobs, rent, etc., etc.) is a drain on the economy and with voters demanding every expanding benefits, it eventually wrecks the economy. No socialist country becomes more prosperous. The standard of living always declines over time.
So when someone calls you a communist, they are saying you support programs that sound good, but ultimately fail.

You are right. A good portion of Americans have no idea why communism wasn't good and why the Soviets were our enemies. Same goes for today how so many Americans are completely oblivious when it comes to terrorism and don't even know the difference between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. It is partly the Bush Administration's fault for spreading lies but i'd say its mostly the people's fault for being so oblivious.

It means that they are follow and believe anything they are told but don't know why they follow or believe it and so they cannot argue their point because they don't have any!
So they have to resort to an equally ignorant ploy: name calling.
They don't have the slightest clue what communism is or what it means they just think it is an insult and so they spit it out and leave it at that. It is pathetic really but it gets them through.

It shows that they don't know the difference between Communism and Socialism. The Liberal agenda being pushed right now (especially by Hilary Clinton) is a Socialist agenda. That's a fact, not an opinion.

When we compare someone to a communist, we are basically saying we don't like their leftist, socialist agenda and they belong on the same trash heep that Ronald Reagan put Gorby, Mao, and the rest of that bunch on.

I think it bespeaks a lack of on-point, relevent argument. It's like arguing with someone, and when you're losing, calling them fat or black or poor. It has nothing to do with anything most times here.
