why can't i type in my command prompt?

Question

i open my command prompt and it doesn' let me type anything within it!

i have windows xp

still not working, now when i open it, it closes. and i still can't type. GRRR

Does it refuse typing at all, or is it just VERY slow?

I had a problem with the command prompt only taking about one keystroke per 2 seconds, and it turned out to be some IBM ThinkPad service -- I disabled the service and it works fine now.

is it actually open and is the cursor blinking?
if the "black box" is open then check the address thats showing i.e. C:/documents and settings/owner/desktop you need to click in the box to type anything there......if you are not the admin or do not have admin access this could be the "problem" as you may not have permission to use the command prompt. If you do have admin access, then try opening the command prompt from the shortcut in the all programs list, or explore the drive to find the direct link to the command prompt and see if you can type in there. What would you need the command prompt for anyways? Unless you feel like running a ping command; for diagnosing connection problems, or for running a command you don't otherwise know how to accomplish without the prompt. Other option is to boot into safe mode, with command prompt.
