South Florida is under water restrictions, so emptying and refilling it ever other day is not an option. I have a small pump and ran it for 4.5 hours yesterday but have heard that I should add bleach. I just don't know how much.

Based on the measurements you gave you pool is about 1100 gallons. To increase the chlorine by 1 PPM (Part Per Million) you need about 2 1/2 ounces of standard bleach. A normal pool should have between 1-2 PPM of chlorine. Since you probably don't have any stabilizer you should add this amount daily. Preferably in the evening since the sun destroys the chlorine.

If you wanted to add stablizer, about 5 ounces of cyanuric acid will do it, but then you would probably want to test the water before you add more bleach as the stabilzer will prevent it from breaking down and you could build up the chlorine level over time.

They use a gallon of bleach to clean a new water well, so it does work, it just won't stay active very long. Just experiment. When you can no longer see the bottom of the pool, add a quart. 24 hours later, if the water is clear then that is enough, if not try 1/2 gal. Much easier (and probably cheaper), buy the small packets of "shock treatment" at Walmart, K-Mart, Lowes, etc. Again experiment, place 1/4 in wait overnight and see.

I'm in Florida; have owned homes with pools, and I'd suggest a test kit for one thing,,,and NOT strictly just bleach. Pool Store visit; test kit; small floater, Chlorine tabs.

A visit to a qualified store and knowing the gallons held in the pool will give you an accurate determination of HOW MUCH of anything.
