The extremists on both sides are having too much of an effect on politics.

The biggest problem is that the moderates often don't vote in the primaries. The extreme left decide who will be the candidate for the democratic party & the extreme right decide for the Republican party.

Which leaves the moderates having to choose the "lesser of two evils."

No. When you compare the democrats to politics in Western Europe, you will see that the Democrats would not really be considered to be a left wing party on the extremes.
They would be considered a centrist party.

Look at the left wing parties in France (in opposition), Spain (in government), Germany (in a coalition government as a minor partner) and the UK (in government).
