It's mainly due to cultural reasons. Geographically, Europe is just an extended peninsular projecting from the western side of Asia. That's why there is a certain amount of debate over the boundary between the two continents; some place the line at the Caucasus Mountains, others at the Urals. But European civilizations and Asian civilizations had little to no contact for millenia while they were developing, leading to a general consensus that the two regions were very separate from each other in all ways, including geographically even though the local geological features don't necessarily support that classification.

This is a cultural hang-on from when Europeans were defining the shape of the world. Many people today refer, instead, to the Eurasian continent.

It has to do with the size of the landmass as well as the cultural differences between the 2 places.

if we were going by landmass there would be 3 continents (1) Antarctica,(2) EuropeAsiaAfrica (3) NorthSouthAmerica
