Moved to Boston area recently. No can do. Portland OR or Seattle WA? Discuss.?
I moved to the Boston area recently and after visiting NYC and living here for a while I've decided the north east is just not my style. I lived in Phoenix AZ for 5 years, LA for 2 years, and San Fran area for 17 years (which is nice but far too expensive).

The area I've liked the most is the northwest. I have family there and I've stayed there for long periods of time, so I think I have a good idea of what its like.

My question is as a creative (musical) gay man which city would you pick? Seattle or Portland?

I think the people in the northwest are way more laid back like me . . . this whole north eastern overly educated way of acting is getting old, and I just dont think the area is for me. Plus northwest is much cheaper and the pay rate is similar for my job (cat scan).

Just want some opinions.

Hello? Did you ask about a place for a gay man? Seattle on Capitol hill. There are even some gay-friendly churches that would welcome your musical talents.
As far as other things are concerned, you have not given enough information on what you are looking for. People have their own opinions on whether Seattle or Portland is better, but it's based on personal interests. Perhaps you would have better luck if you listed some of yours.

I've lived in Portland for the past 6 years and I'm planning on moving to Seattle. Portland really is a nice place to settle down and live, but after 6 years it can be boring. The traffic in the Seattle area is worse than Portland and Portland has better public transit, but there are many more things to do in Seattle.

Sometimes though the Pacific Northwest can be TOO laid-back - there isn't a sense of urgency sometimes when you want there to be.

I love Portland way more than Seattle; it has more personality and is less congested. It has all the good stuff of a huge metropolis (culture, stuff to do, great restaurants, etc), without the bad stuff (expensive, crowded, HORRIBLE traffic, etc). But, as a gay man and an artist, Seattle might suit you better since it's a larger city, and therefore probably has a larger gay community and musician community. Both cities are really liberal, so either way you'll enjoy it for sure.

My vote is for Seattle. Of course, that may be because I have never been to Portland...:)

I loved Seattle. I am a Texas girl but Seattle really won me over. If I could move there I would. I love downtown and how you can just get out and walk. The weather is fairly nice-temperature wise. Even when it rains, it is just a constant sprinkle.
Seattle is laid-back and artsy. There are so many things to do...

Reading your question and seeing all the places you have been, I would say Seattle is the better choice. You will need some culture and Portland has none.

Now if you were a person moving from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, or Iowa then I would say that Portland may be more to your liking since you would not be expecting much.

Yep, for you no doubt that you are going to be happier in Seattle.

I would go with Seattle myself, but only because one of my favorite TV shows, Grey's Anatomy, is there. It seems like an interesting place to live, I wouldn't mind living there myself.
