A dish will just about work indoors provided it is pointing in the right direction through a large window. If there's a wall in the way there's no way it will work. I've known people successfully mount a dish on a tripod and have it sitting on their balcony.

It MAY work through a window with a full view of the Southern sky. I have also seen them on balconies and on short posts in the yard. Some travel trailers have them on a small tripod that they sit outside when camping.

I imagine if they were not affected by walls then you could site them anywhere on the outside of your house, which you can't. They have to be set in a specific place, facing a certain way, which leads me to think that walls interefere with the signal.

Yes they do.
You will have to make sure it is pointing through a window. The strength of the received signal will lower, so you might get picture drop outs.
