dont know
but bread only lands buttedr sidwe down because of a freak of nature
because of the average height of dinner tables bread falling off the table only has time to turn half way over before coming to rest on the floor if you dropped it from say 100 feet it would roll over many times before touching the floor

The bread would still land buttered side down. You would have to make the butter with cats feet to notice a significant change in the butter side up to buttered side down ratio.

it's nothing to do with the butter you use but the height of your table.
it's that the distance that the bread / toast falls is not far enough to allow for a full rotation.
if a piece of bread / toast were dropped from a higher height you would find that the bread / toast would consistantly fall butter side up.
you could even experiment to find the critical distance, however If you feel the need to perform experiments like this then this leads questions into the state of your mental health
Personally my experimentation has shown that if you strap some slices of buttered toast to a cat's back (works better with toast as the cat seems to like the warmth :) )
and drop it to see how long the cat will hover, slowly spinning before hitting the floor, ( I have worked out how long this effect would last). Unfortunately the cat tends to ruins the experiment by licking all the butter off of the piece of toast.
Adding a cone to the cat's head to prevent this adds a whole new dynamic as the tendency for a cat with a cone on to land "cone first" adds a z-axis rotation into the mix which the cat just finds disconcerting :)

You need to outsmart the forces of evil gravity. Just when it thinks you are going to butter your bread on one side, flip it and butter the other side instead. Now, when your bread falls, it will be butter side up ... but I hope you'll still bin it cos you surely wouldn't eat anything that had been on the floor?

NO! you tie a buttered toast to the back of a cat, and drop the cat off a platform in the subway.

I'm going to butter the cat, throw him out of the bedroom window and see what happens, I'll get back to you.
ouch.... he's not up for this experiment!
