Computer literacy is a skill that is in demand. So is literacy in general, the ability to tell time, lift 30 pounds, stand up for 4 hours at a stretch...whatever the job requires. Companies hire for the work that they do. If you have the skills to match the job, you're hired. If you don't, you aren't.

Just as everyone in the industrialized world ought to know how to read, they ought to understand the basics of computer operation. It has nothing to do with fairness...it has to do with survival.

It's nearly impossible to be competitive in today's job market if you are not computer literate, you need to evolve or you lose out. The job market thrives on competition and its not worth the money to hire (and train) people that don't know what are now basic skills. As such I believe it is very fair.

I believe everyone should be computer literate because at this point not knowing how to operate a computer at the very least on a basic level is like not knowing how to read and write. It increases productivity, connectivity, and information gathering capacity (you can get any information you would need online if you know how to look for it, that alone is worth it) to name a few things.

Yes it is fair. The reason is this. The computer is another office machine that must be used day to day. The computer has taken the place of typewriter, out-dated filing systems, calculator, phone, and even fax machines. So to be competitive into today's market you must be able to work one. Do you have to be an IT expert NO. But you have to know the basics and most companies will allow for on the job training to learn their specific programs.

If you were running a business and needed your employees to be computer savvy..... why would you hire people that weren't? Why shouldn't people that spent the time and effort to learn computers, get the job?

A more important skill in life is empathy. Looking at this as to whether it's fair or not, totally misses the needs of both sides. It negates other peoples work.

If one is not computer savvy... then look to jobs that don't require it. If you only want the "computer savvy" jobs... Learn computer skills.

kids these days have been using computers and the internet since they were in grade 1. We live in a computer age. Yes, everyone should make some attempt to learn the basics of how to use a computer.

Yes, I think it is fair. Nearly all companies use computers, and they need people who know how to use them so they can get on with the job, rather than learning to use one. Not only that, but getting yourself upskilled in using computers is very easy, and often free. Alternatively, find a relative who is willing to show you the basics - they're very easy to pick up

Well fact is a fact in most profession work is impossible without using computers.
Yes atleast if people have basic idea how to use the computer will be easier for them and the employer. If you feel that its not fair then probably you must be thinking about blue color jobs. they certainly dont require computers

What does fair have to do with it? It's called trade-skill which companies need.
