Poetic Words

Flat appears the acts of fate recorded in mere prose
Though accurate they lack the depth of feelings stirred inside
And what is lost may well be best and tell us most of all
How we perceived what now is past for future hearts to know
The twist and turn of well heeled phrase that dances on a tongue
The rise of crimson tide to flush in anger or in lust
The ebb and flow of passion as it floods the dead with life
The coloring of memories that shadowed time concealed
Go far beyond the thin description of what eyes have seen
Like arms that wrap around a thing composed of separate parts
Describing such collection in a sentence parallel
Metaphoric lines connect to form a single thought
Defining by avoiding object’s all to simple shape
In Haiku, Tanka, metered rhyme or free and lyric verse
It’s inner vision that is sought to see things not yet born
How strange it seems that there could be such simple combinations
Of words that fall from clever lips that unlock inspirations.

and

A Poet’s Tools

They reach inside with wordy tools
And find that part that we’ve kept hidden
Then use their pens to pick the lock
That opens up emotion’s chest
To flood our minds with images
Of days long gone and those ahead
The smells and sights and youthful laughter
And the crying part we long thought dead
Emotion’s flood cascades as tears
Or we feel our souls take flight
These workers of the common word
Bring on such rare delight
How well they paint their scenery
Unseen by mortal eye
Of azure sands and crimson stones
Beneath a purple sky
Both fantasy and history
Are mixed like days and nights
In a pot of pure imagination
Whenever a poet writes.

and

Poet’s Pen

These thoughts keep leaking from my pen
Bleeding lines upon the virgin page
Images and concepts that fired my brain
Opposing emotions like love and rage
Curl into lines, stanzas, and refrains
Yet the greedy pen writes on
And having writ, moves on
To another page with other thoughts
Oh, what the pen drains from my mind
So cruel, and yet so kind
This arbiter of my soul
Exposer of dark corners
Tattler of fantasy’s indiscretions
Betrayer of secret screams
Black blood released in streams
Ranting, panting, chanting rhymes
Stealing, squealing, petty crimes
Laughing, gaffing, weaving lies
Winds and water, earth and skies
Nothing sacred, it bleeds till dry
The power to heal, a reason to cry
These thoughts keep leaking from my pen
Bleeding lines upon the virgin page
Making my life a public act
Appearing nightly on an empty stage

I think a poem is expression of the soul. Hence when people say poetry in motion as in when it's done sports. Or when something is done in a higher caliber then what is considered to be the norm. Something that helps us feel or to appreciate humankind and the universe at the same time. That's what I think a poem can be what a poem should be.

apoem is a complete and self-contained piece of writing in verse that is set out in lines of a set length and uses rhythm, imagery, and often rhyme to achieve its effect...

the gifts the heart has woven
the transparent world above
all good deeds done to others
soar as high as the dove

the promise each day brings
has blessed us with so much
like all the very simple things
our family, friends, and such

tears falling every second
are caught by the hand of fate
that leads us to the world above
on a promised date

but then we do not realize
that every second matters
so spend our life without those tears
just fill it all with laughters

A poem is a wondrous thing,
As on a page it sits.
There's folks out there would think it dumb,
They have a bunch of fits.
The things with lyrics that I write,
Will rhyme and sound real nice.
The bounce I hear in reading,
Will make me read it twice.
So now you see just what it is,
That I call poetry.
I hope that now you understand,
Just what it means to me.

Hope that answers a little

I think Anthony M has it right- an expression of the soul. i think it's an outlet for emotions that are too strong to be expressed through normal words- to say- "I'm sad" doesnt' cut it, but if you say "woe is me" or the "epitome of sorrow" or some such: it gives you a verbal trigger to an image- often a subjective image based on the readers own experience. Poetry is interpretive, expressive, emotional. You need to be a master of words and a master of one's own emotions to be able to write poetry. you have to feel deeper i believe... you are a conduit between emotion and ink. it truly is an art form that can be more vivid than a Da Vinci or a Monet

a group of words, that rhyme or have a theme. rhyme like time and rhyme or a theme like saying goodbye (free verse)

Beautiful

Because of the way you look at me
When I’m crying a wall of tears
Every moment that you hold your hand out for mine
That you would never forget me after many years
After a moment so sacred and rare
You still find a way to make me smile through the pain
Unique love given to ones heart
While laughing and having fun out in the cool rain
Trusting in a moment where its hard to find
That one special friend that one special soul
Indefinite time spans over time
When your heart makes mine whole
Face to face, you read my face like a book
Gently turning the pages, like the delicate petals of a flower
Uniqueness is our love, no one knows what it creates
Except for us, for its creates a unique kind of power
Love that we create and that we share
From one heart to the other, you know its pure

n. an arrangement of words in verse; especially, a rhythmical composition, sometimes rhymes, expressing facts, ideas or emotions in a style more concentrated, imaginative, and powerful than that of ordinary speech: some poems are in metre while others are in free verse. (Webster’s Dictionary).

And so, claims the time of those less indolent than she.
