You do not * have* to, but why wouldn't you? It is allot less intrusive than, say CANCER or HPV....Some things simply should be done, no matter if they are uncomfortable or not. If you are not sexuality active, or never plan to be, you don't need to worry, remember though,..even oral sex, or fooling around can give you STD'S . It is recommended that you make a GYN appointment before you become sexually active, to get to know your Doctor, then, when you decide that you are ready for sex, to get the information you need to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. From the very first time we women have sex, we are at risk for SO many problems. It is really the best, safest way to prevent getting sick.
So,the answer is no, you do not HAVE to get a pap test....but you should. Think of it this way....which would be worse, getting your yearly pap and breast exam, or having to have surgery, or even face death because you made the wrong choice.

No one ever HAS to have any sort of medical test or exam. It is always the patient's choice.
Pap tests are *recommended* in the US starting at age 21 or three years after first vaginal sexual intercourse, but again, it is up to the patient. No one can ever force you to have one. In most other countires, cervical cancer screening starts later. In the UK, women do not start getting pap smears until age 25, and only every three years, not annually. There is no evidence that screening women earlier and more often actually prevents mortality.
Additionally, current guidelines say that women over 65 may stop having pap smears.
Some doctors beleive that virgins don't need pap smears no matter what their age.

Yes it is a necessary test to have to protect a woman's health to try and catch cervical cancer (if it occurs) in it's earliest stages. It can by coincidence pick up an infection.
A woman when she's 18 or 21 or already sexually active (whichever comes first) should have a pap smear.
Virgins are not exempt from getting pap smears because they too can get HPV.

Pap smears are a crucial part of every woman's health exam over the age of 18. I'm not sure I understand why one would choose to refuse it. The test is a screening method for cervical cancer.

It is your choice and your responsibility. There is no compulsion.
If you are a virgin then not necessary at this age .If you are sexually active (or have been)then it would be foolish not to do so.
I have detected abnormal cells in 16 year old -who were sexually active.
A few minutes could literally save your life and/or fertility
