Try this software called Data Shredder.

You can choose from the various known algorithms for secure wipe (DOD, Guttman, etc) or custom number of passes with your own selected method (zeroing, ones, or random). It will take a long time. JT

Depends on who you are worried about recovering your data :-P.

For minor worries, it is best to either use a program that does a low level format, or long format. As an additional precaution, you can delete the entire partition prior, set it as a different one, then do the formatting, that will fool crappy recovery programs a lot of the time if they go searching deeper than just the last partition, b/c it will see nothing on the one that you formatted over, because it is a different data format, and if it does happen to find the other partition, it will just see a bunch of null data.

If you need something stronger than that, i suggest either Kill Disk, or something similar that does multiple writes and erases over each sector / zero-fill. Do a google search for any of the following: 'secure format' , ' zero fill' , 'wipe hard drive'.

You can also try this as well: http://dban.sourceforge.net/.

Good luck.

It is said that even after formatting 20 times, the data can still be recovered usign sophisticated tools. But such tools are usually available with only investigating agencies like FBI and CIA etc. Normally, there are programs called shredders which work at the hardware level and overwrite the blocks with random data multiple times so that the data cannot be recovered. These are fairly good. Instead of considering what you have written you can try shredding the individual files that you feel are of sensitive nature. I haven't heard if data can still be recovered after that.

If you want to destroy data with full surety, you have to physically destroy the platters on the hard disk by removing it from the laptop.

Two methods:
1. Scrub the disk with software.
2. Remove the drive and smash it to small bits. (I prefer buying a new high speed drive and destroy the nearly worn out drive in most cases).

For method 1, you need a program like Darik's Boot and Nuke at http://dban.sourceforge.net to repeatedly scrub the drive clean.

there are several drive "wipe" programs out there. There's a free one available at the link below, but I don't know if its any good as I've never needed to wipe a drive.

You are going to use a program to wipe your hard disk like disk wipe.
