Malthus was an early 19th century economist/political theorist. He stated that population would contine to increase in geometrical progression and that eventually the economy would be unable to support that population. Initially, his views were held to be generally true until observation as the century went on showed that they were, in fact, not borne out by what was happening. In part this was due to increases in production caused by the industrial revolution and in part (in later years) by families being limited by the practice of family planning.
