Yes it is possible - it is also possible for them to hijack American planes so I am not sure why you are differentiating these two options. Unless you are suggesting that the rest of the world is ignoring the terrorist threat and has no security and that the US government despite knowing this does nothing about it. In which case you really need to get out and see the world.

If it's possible for the defense scanners to be away from the controls w/no back-up, while the Defense planes took off in the wrong direction, then YES.
