They can not be a friend first, one will lose all respect for them as a parent.

As one gets older, the roles change and they'll be a friend, but, ALWAYS a parent.

Some parents and their child(ren) choose to see their bond as a friendship and not as a parent-child relationship. I don't see my parents that way, I believe I have friends for friends and parents to be my parents.
You should decide yourself how you'd define the bond between you and your father. That he prefers to see himself as your friend more than a father doesn't mean you have to see him that way.

my parents are my friends...and not everybody gets to say this out loud...i guess i am one of the few lucky ones...they married really young and in a way they are too...my bad days are when they sometimes looks like me...and it is hard to say that they are my parents...heeheehee = )
