I hear the phrase a lot, yet I don't really know what it means.

It usually refers to people who are into indie hiphop, Talib,Mos Def,The Roots,Madlib,J Dilla and MF DOOM and old school hiphop like Tribe called quest and De la soul. They usually hate popular hiphop.

You will see them in Hip-Hop lounges, with a backpack full of CD demo's, often trying to sell them. They like to start freestyle cyphers in the lounges as well.

Backpackers are ppl that pretty much ride the train and carry everything in there backpacks...Rhyme books, Tag book, markers, Cds and cd player...etc you will always see these ppl rocking a backpack.

well, it started as a term for graffitti artists who used to carry all their shhit in backpacks. But now its used as a demeaning term for those that dont listen to mainstream rap and are fans of the underground and alternative hip hop scenes. .....I dont find it that demaning.
