If the program is trying to show quoted text why don't they insert quotation marks which is less inconvenient if you want to copy and paste the text elsewhere. Presumably someone thought it was a good idea for some reason....

It simply means it has been forwarded!
If you receive a new, not forwarded, text email that you want to forward to someone else, simply copy and paste the text into a new email (compose) and the message will be new, not forwarded and have no > in front of each line.
Also, when you forward, you show email addresses of other people to the new recipient! That's dangerous and can lead to more spam!

Its because its a cut and paste in the first place, before its sent to you!
