Is your desire for a female president based merely on jealousy that noone of your gender has been in office, or do you think that there is something that a female president could offer that none of the 43 presidents so far have?

penguinese- I'm not saying that women aren't qualified; I'm just saying that if a woman (ie Billary) runs for president, she shouldn't be voted for just because she's a woman.; she should be voted for based on whether or not she is presidential material.

Qualified? You're kidding me, right? A chimp would be equally qualified as our current president.

All I'm saying is that I don't want a woman president to be elected just because she's a woman. Nothing more, and nothing less.

To generalize your question I would rather have the most qualified person, male or female. Like answer faerie, V.T. said genitalia doesn't matter. Because I have a penis and someone else has a vagina doesn't mean that those with a vagina make superior decisions (based upon the fact that they have a vagina). To do so would be to commit argumentum ad personam.

In direct answer to your question, I would rather have a qualified male who made it to the presidency through his own hard work than a female who made it to the the presidency by way of affirmative action or some need to correct a perceived social injustice (argumentum ad misercordiam).

In response to Jo's assertion that only male presidents commit acts of war, this is either fallacy of Accident, Argumentum ad Hominem, Petitio Principii, Biased sample, or Hasty Generalization.

Answering the specific question you posted, of course i'd rather a male president who is qualified than a female who isn't.
But there are women who are qualified, and there is going to be the moment for her to take the place. Is not about jealous or because a women can have something that other man haven't had.
It's about women who have the same oportunities at this moment, that didn't have before, so there is noone who have gotten there.
Anyway, there have been women in other parts in the world who have achieve that kind of positions, like Margaret Tatcher, and today Michelle Bachelet.
Again, it's not about taking YOUR PLACE, is about compiting for a position with the same oportunities.

Not even in Italy we had first junior beeing prez and then the ex first lady running for office.
Whats next the formers president 3rd degree cousin ?
As a feminist I feel the best qualified candidate should be voted for, regardless of gender.

I wasn't aware that it took a great deal in this day and age to "qualify" to be president. Perhaps a few more acting classes like Reagan, or a better haircut like Kennedy. If I only had filthy rich parents with old money that's been in the family for generations ... boy, I miss those times when the rich ruled American politics ...

Oh, wait, they still do.

How about a qualified one? But I'm not really a Feminist... so I could care less if it's male or female.

Al Gore for President!!!

I would settle for having a "qualified" President of any kind...

Where are they...?

I just recently reached the minimum age requirement to run for President...vote for me...my platform is legalized Maryjane, free parking for everyone forever, and no more ever having to stand in line anywhere ever again...I will accomplish those three things as promised...and then do whatever the hell I want...Oh...and gays get to marry...and you can buy beer anywhere 24/7 (except for a 3 hour period on the 1st Day of School)...Will you vote for me?

And if there's a woman out there more qualified than I am...I'll vote for her instead of myself, and be her Whitehouse Cabana Boy...

it seems to me that we have had many non-qualified males as President. So far, the Union survives.
I prefer a qualified person.

a qualified female president could indeed offer something that no male president has-- the female perspective and experiences. Like knowing how critical GOOD child care is to a woman being able to work well paying jobs, and how hard it is to find that good child care.

Of course I'd rather have a male president who is qualified over a female who is not.

Heck, I'd rather have a male democrat than a female republican in the white house.

The first choice. I make my political decisions based on merit, not gender. For '08, I'd like to see Joe Biden's words (substance) in Barack Obama's mouth (style). I would be thrilled if they were women, but there isn't much we can do about that, is there?

I don't have a very high regard for Women's lib! I drove a truck when I was younger and when some of the women forced the company to hire them, it made me sick. They wouldn't change their own tires, put fuel in their trucks or even do the simplest of repairs. It was the same when I drove a cab. I am a female and my father always said to me, "If you want the same pay do the very same work."

There is only one woman in history I think would have been a good President and that was Eleanor Roosevelt.

All the others who have ran, are running or may run in the future are WAY to unstable!

Hilliary Clinton couldn't even control her husband. What makes her think she can run our country. Don't forget "White Water" That was her mess. And have you heard her change her voice when she makes a speech. OH MY GOSH!
