Yes it is necessary to have yearly pap smears. Your first visit to the GYN should be before you have sex or if you are having problems with your period. Once we women start having sex it is SO very important to get yearly exams. Your Doctor will be at the forefront of your health. The pap smear and std tests are important facts in our lives. They can save your life, or your fertility.
You should see your GYN once a year or more if you have ANY problems....down there..... Yearly paps will be able to tell the doctor how things are in that area, if you have contracted cervical cancer risks such as HPV. It will keep your vagina and cervix healthy and your exams will include a breast exam to help fight breast cancer. THESE ARE IMPORTANT !!

You need them once a year if you're sexually active, and if you're over, say, 20 and still a virgin you should have them also.
It tests for cervical cancer (or cells that could become cancer) as well as many STDs and they usually also show you how to examine your breasts for lumps as well. All very important for women these days.
Don't be afraid of the test. It's a little uncomfortable, but usually over very quick. Make sure to ask for a lady doc if it would make you more comfortable.

Yes it is, it helps detect any issues going on with your reproductive system.
You should have it done every year.
It should be done after you start menstruating and BEFORE you have sex.
I had my first pap at age 11, after I started menstruating.

It is good to get one every year if you are sexually active. It is way better to find out early if anything is wrong than to not go and really regret it later.
