The very first satellite, Sputnik, was put up by the Soviet Union as a demonstration of its technological prowess. Satellites were put up after that to perform scientific studies and to facilitate communications, which are pretty much the main reasons today as well.

Satellites have a very good view of the Earth, so they are very handy for sending information between two points that don't have a direct line of sight between them.

You use radio waves to send information to the satellite, which sends it back to the location. TV stations across the world get their data feeds in this way.

satellites developed actually for communications.. there are areas on Earth considered "dead spots" or places cannot be reached by signals of just antenna on earth that is why they build satellites for better transmission and receptions of data for different purposes like military purposes and commercial purposes etc.
