I have a amana heat pump and the air conditioner turns on fine but when it goes off you can hear a popping in the return, why? sounds like popcorn popping..lol

It is likely expansion and contraction as the cooling coil warms up after running.

It could be contraction cause by the piping cooler.

It can also be caused by the system pressure equalizingand there may be some oil in the lines.

You should have it seviced. There is an oil separator heater which prevents this from happening. If it is not working, oil coud be trapped in low parts of the system. This can affect the compressor and eventually burn it out.

Is it the filter settling back into its holder? Sometimes the filter will get sucked up out of the bracket.
