BestBuy Geek squad was supposed to only repair the dc power plug in the back of my computer but instead after having the laptop for 4 months returned it with a new hard drive and told me they threw away my old one. They told me they did it it as a favor for taking so long on the power jack repair???!!! When I freaked out and asked why didnt they call me first before they did this they acted like I was a jerk because they were "doing me a favor." There was nothing else wrong with the laptop when I dropped it off. Just the power jack and that was specifically put into the work order. Since I said I was going to consult an attorney the manager and corporate refuse to talk to me or return
my deposit. Ive lost priceless photos and manuscript files now. I didnt have the means or a reason to back them up at the time because I thought I was dropping it off for a simple repair. I was on the road at the time and dropped it off at the nearest BB. I want blood from these jackholes.

business law, civil law... if you have the "news on you side" where you live i would call and have them televised. basicly you call your local news station and tell them what happened and they investigate it and it is all seen by the public. that is a good way to get them good. no one would get anything repaired again.

"Priceless" won't work. You'll have to quantify. And electronic discovery has nothing to do with your case. Any competent attorney. (You were without the computer for 4 months for a power plug repair? The data doesn't sound too critical. Is there a time limit there for unclaimed computers?) You'll probably have some difficulty locating an attorney if you aren't willing to pay a retainer.

Probably business contract law -- they'll have more experience with intellectual property and computer data issues than most tort attorneys. Even though this is a tort (conversion) case.

Make sure you get one familiar with the rules for electronic discovery, because assessment of the damages value for the lost date is going to be a crucial issue.

Good luck.
