I recently leased a building and am going to open a bar ( this building has been a bar before ) , however i had to have the lease to apply for the liquor license. Whats something i could do in the meantime with the building to make money ( it takes 2-6 months to get the liquor license ). Oh btw its in Ellis County, Texas, USA. Hoping not to have to do a BYOB or having to give liquor/beer away by donation/cover charge (that may possibly piss TABC off)

Yes it is legall (in texas) to give alcohol away in a bar without a liquor licesne and you cant SELL liquor, beer, or wine without a liquor license

Have no-alcohol concerts, dances, and other events for underage kids. This market is largely neglected in my city, leaving a great business opportunity untapped.

If you don't like kids, maybe a coffeehouse with poetry slams and live music for adults. There are always people looking for a microphone and an audience. If you can find the ones with a following it's money in the bank.

You are committed to the building and in a catch 22 situation. If you don't lease the building, and the TABC finds out, you will be ineligible to receive such license.

Open the bar and serve beer and wine, maybe some food. If your clients eat, they will not want to drink too much. Something to keep in mind. Find some bands for the weekend that will play for the door. This will help off-set your monthly expenses and start a Clientele. You get to meet new customers and talk up your "Pending Liquor License".

Its highly unlikely that BYOB as an establishment or "giving it away" is legal.

In the meantime you could try to have a dance-club, concert venue, whatever type of music that will attract the crowd you're hoping to get to show up, and make sure people know that you're working on getting the liquor liscense so they'll come back when you do have it.

I would say make it into a sports bar but without the ability to serve liquor that won't work. In my opinion you are probably going to have to eat the lease until you get your liscense approved. If you open it up as something else it might actuallly hurt you when you open as a bar.

I used to work at a place for teens that had dancing. It was called Break the Habit and served non-alcoholic beverages.
It was essentially a place where they could hang out w/each other, dance & converse. Of course we had to monitor the kids consistantly for contraband. Not too bad though, they really liked having a place to go.
Another idea would be to open it up to a 50 & over hang out with good coffee, sugar & sugar free stuff and books. You can call it reminisce! Good Luck!

Find a group that needs meeting space for a few months until their building is ready to occupy.
