You will be definitely lost without a car. People will give you direction to go somewhere and if you don't some wheels that you will out of luck.

Carlsbad is located about 30 miles North of San Diego. You would definitely need a car if you want to get around easily anywhere much beyond the city limits of Carlsbad! The Transit bus would take you about an hour and half to SD and that commuter train would be an expensive option. You're too far from downtown San Diego to rely upon a bus so unless you plan to stay near home most of the time a car would seem almost a necessity? PS: Are you in the military?

You can get by w/o a car depending on what part of San Diego County you are living; usually the denser neighborhoods near downtown and some of the beach communities are best for living w/o a car. BUT if you are living in North County, which includes Carlsbad, you will need a car for sure. Public Transit in Northern SD County is horrible. If you are working in one of the office parks off of Palomar Airport Road, buses do not run often at all in that area. I would definately bring a car for the Carslbad area.

North County Transit District has both buses and the Coaster commuter rail. Your best bet is to get the locations of where you'd need to go on a regular basis to see if there's bus or train service. The Coaster has Friday night service for visiting the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego, and they also have service to the Padres and Chargers in connection with the San Diego trolley. There is an online trip planner you can use called Otis (see the 2nd link). Only by experimenting on your specific travel requirements will you be able to determine whether you need a car or not.

there is public transportation, California is pretty good about that, but we are a car state. I would check into where you are going to be living and its proximity to work/school/shopping that sort of thing and decide if you can get by without a car, if your going to be a student you might be able to. California has some of the highest insurance rates in the country, especially southern Cal, gas is more expensive, gas taxes are high, registration is also pretty high, you will need to re-register your car in California and that will also mean a state smog check. There is also lots and lots of traffic and people in San Diego are some of the worse drivers I have ever experienced, they do not know how to yield or merge. I would rather drive in LA than SD.

NOOOOOOOOO! San Diego is really spread out not like some major cities. To get to most places freeways are required. So living without a car is not an option. You can but you won't get far.

Good question. Depends on how much commuting you will have to do. You'll be close to the beach, hopefully. It won't be easy to get to downtown for ballgames or the night life. I really think it would be hard to be here without a car. If you have access to one once in a while it would probably be ok. If you just want to hang around the beach than you will be ok.

I lived in Spring Valley for several years without a car, and the trolley was all I needed. I also lived in Ocean Beach for a couple of years with no car.
The main thing you need to be concerned with is grocery shopping, and whether you need to take your laundry out. I was lucky enough to find apartments right next to full service shopping centers.
If you are an avid bike rider, as my husband was, you can get nearly anywhere with a good quality bike.

No! You can not. Sure there are other forms of transit such as the trolley or the bus but watch out that it can be very expensive for a while.
