It depends on the reason you sing. If you want to play ingenues, then no because typically they are sopranos. There are however some very good leading lady and character roles that are altos. Your range is what it is. With the help of a very good voice teacher you can (over a very long time) expand your range to the point where you may be able to sing a much wider variety of songs but there's not guarentee and you certainly wouldn't want to injur your instrument in the name of singing a higher song.

Opera has many arias for both soprano and altos and classical music has many choices for all ranges and every genre has songs with belt in them and I think even more so for an alto since you would be using more of a chesty range than a soprano.

Talk to your voice teacher for reassurance :-)

Alto is a great range to have if you happen to be an alto - pretty useful if you're a tenor. Not so good if you're a soprano or bass.

Consider, your voice class is more than the range - it's about timbre and quality as well.

Think of it this way - I can play a middle C on a trumpet, I can also play a middle C on a clarinet -- they're the same note but they sound very different.

It really is more about the tonal quality of the voice and not how high or low one sings. Range can be developed with practice and quality instruction.

The real key to a great singing voice is a great teacher.

Guy or girl?
It's better to be able to sing higher and lower.

I had the second lowest and the higest range out of the girls in my choir last year.
My choir director had me sing soprano though.

just take more lessons, they can help you get a better range, but be warned, a range is a range! good luck!
