At the grocery store, there's very little you *need* to get for a newborn baby.
Formula, if you think you'll be bottlefeeding instead of breastfeeding, as well as bottles, nipples, bottle brushes, a caddy to wash everything in the dishwasher... Don't buy more than one can of formula right now, though, even if you know you'll be bottlefeeding, because you could find out early on that your baby is allergic to milk-based formula and needs soy. Nursing pads are good to have either way. Get a big box if you intend to breastfeed, and a smaller one if you don't, or don't think you will for long. Once you aren't breastfeeding anymore, for a week or so, your breasts become engorged, sore and can leak some.
If you plan to nurse, more than anything, make sure you're eating healthy yourself. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water and get your calcium.
Get one thing of baby tylenol, and one of baby ibuprofen. When your baby has a fever, you should alternate between the two. Get an ear thermometer (I LOVE them, they're the only way my kids will let me take their temp) and a rectal one (if you call the doctor about your baby being sick, they'll most likely want you to take a rectal temp to get the most accurate reading). Get at least one hospital-grade nasal aspirator (commonly referred to as a "snotsucker"). DON'T get the smaller kind with the thicker plastic tip, they don't work for crap. Get the old kind, all rubber with the smaller tip because your baby's nostrils will be teeny tiny for quite some time. Little Noses saline nasal spray. Little Tummys Gas Relief Drops. Well, let's just say, I would pick up the whole "Little Remedies" collection, they work well and are reasonably priced. Baby-size nail clippers.
Vasaline, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste (I'd reccommend it over Desitin any day), baby shampoo, baby body wash, baby lotion... I would get the lavender night-time bath stuff and lotion as well, it really is nice and soothing. Rubbing alcohol and cotton balls for the umbilical cord.
Ask your baby's pediatrician if they reccommend you start vitamin supplement drops early on or wait a few months.
Then of course, diapers and wipes. Get lots of them. Get one or two packages of newborn diapers, dont' open them yet until you need them, and I'd go ahead and buy the wipes in bulk, because you're going to use millions of them over the course of the next three years. There is really and truly NO NEED to pay for the expensive diapers -- Luvs or the store brand usually work just fine. You'll end up needing more size 1 diapers than you will Newborn diapers, because most babies stay in the newborn phase for a very short period of time.
If you're the kind of woman who is addicted to sales (my stepmom is) if you see a major sale on things like baby food or Gerber juice, stock up if you want. Unopened, it lasts until you'll need it in five to seven months.
In most areas, particularly in the US, regular water straight from the tap is fine for things like washing baby bottles and mixing formula with. If you have well-water, if the city water in your area isn't well treated, or if you just want to find a way to spend more money, buy the Nursery Water or purified water in bottles. Seriously, not necessary most of the time, though.
I would also pick up plenty of small trash bags, and some quart-size ziploc bags, to keep in the diaper bag.

You can start buying stuff once you hit 3 months. Just don't buy too much at first. I'm 25 weeks and I go shopping once a week and I have to control myself. haha. I already have lots of clothes for the first year and a bunch of other stuff. I feel like I need to buy everything now but then I'll have nothing to buy later. So just stick to buying a few small things whenever you go out and then go for a big baby shopping spree after your baby shower.

There's not too much you'll need that you can get at a grocery store. As long as you have diapers, wipes, and formula (if you're not breastfeeding) you pretty much have it covered.
You should make sure you have some things for you, though. You will need things like water, gatorade, and snacks if you are breastfeeding, especially for the first few weeks. You will be ravenous and constantly thirsty as so much of your nutrients will go to the baby.

Simethicone drops (gas drops) - they may or may not work, but you'll use them like they're going out of style!
Diaper cream
Cotton Balls (I used them for cleaning baby's eyes)
Lavender baby wash for when you are ready to give him his first bath. Aveeno makes one that smells so nice and lavender has a calming effect.
For you: hemorrhoid cream. Most women get 'em. And you'll want to get rid of 'em. You may even need a doughnut to sit on, scary as it is...eep!
