If I take a small piece of dry ice, and put it in 5 table spoons of water in a glass what would happen?

The dry ice would bubble away, as the solid is converted to gaseous CO2. When the dry ice disappears, the water will become a carbonic acid solution, the acid formed from CO2+ H2O -> H2CO3. It will also have a "selzerish" taste.

Dry Ice And Water

The dry ice is actually carbon dioxide that has sublimated (skipped the liquid stage and gone from a solid straight to a gas). Because dry ice is so cold (-78.3 degrees celsius/-109.3 degrees fahrenheit), the water is a lot warmer than the dry ice. the dry ice sublimates back to a gas and bubbles of CO2 are seen in the water.
I hope this helps :)

Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) gas turns to dry ice when the temperature drops below minus 78.5° C.
What happens when you add water? They will see a high rate of bubbling at first. They should note the rate of bubbling, because they should discover that it slows as the water cools. When the water cools enough, water ice will form a covering on the dry ice. This is interesting to observe. The ice will even encapsulate the chunk of dry ice, then pop, as further sublimation builds up inside the capsule of ice.

No problem. I have done it. You sink the dry ice in water and immediately you see the formation of Carbon Dioxide bubbles due to sublimation of dry ice into water. Temperature does not low so quick to damage your mouth. Water gets rich in Carbon Dioxide. That's all. Good luck! Cheers!

The water would freeze due to the temperature difference between it and the dry ice, and the dry ice would sublime.
