In the DMM, (Domestic Mail Manual) --- "First Class Mail" is sealed against postal inspection. - Postal employees must take a mandatory oath to protect the "sanctity of the mail"..
Any employee that opens first class mail is committing a crime, and if caught will be fired and prosecuted.

They shouldn't unless they suspect that there may be something illegal or hazardous within a package - or if the address has somehow rubbed off and they have no idea where to send it. I once sent a letter that was opened because I had forgot to put my return address on the back of it, and the person whom I had sent it to had moved away. Basically they must have a really good reason. :-)

The postal carrier cannot delay your mail. You should contact your local postmaster or call 1-800-ASK-USPS if you think your mail is not being delivered on a daily basis.

They have a duty and a right to inspect suspicious mail. If necessary the postmaster will get a court order to inspect packages they think contain illegal items, explosives or other dangerous items.

Only if they think there is something suspicious in the package or mail. If they have just reason, yes, they can check your mail.

You did not say what kind of mail it was. So your question is hard to answer.

I thought your mail was private, specially if it looks like all you are getting is a letter.
