We, being the Americans, defined what is the mid-west. However, it was the British who defined what is the mid-east.

Brain is 100% correct, when the pilgrims went exploring they went east to west thus making it the mid west, although they really really should have called it the mid nowhere.
( Apologies if i just insulted you, it's just i've travelled through it and only really remember one thing, a field of cows that were all lined up side by side staring at the road? they were definitely there but wether they were alive or not is another matter. That freaked me out all the way to Cali.)

because the country was settled from the east . the people in the east called it the midwest and the far west
