As a way to explain how the maintenance of a healthy structure benefits society and as a way to explain how illness has set in in the the functional activities are what are the point here. Regulatory, operative (production), and distributive activities are basically what functionalism explains and is only good when it comes to a certain understanding of reality and is to be continued with more insight since reality goes way beyond just the philosophical argument. It goes into the method of objectifying to understand how best to insert oneself in all that reality.

From a functionalist point of view, illness is functional for society. Society will fall apart if people were to never get ill and die, as well as all medical institutions. Functionalists also argue that illness integrates the order in society. Whereby someone is ill, people obey society rules because they need support.
