Does it perhaps have something to do with actual people asking actual questions instead of an argument over who loves blastocysts and torture the most?

Let's see. . .

It's a strategical mistake for them to refuse to do it. They can claim lack of decorum, or that the questions are hand-picked set ups, or anything they please. But the bottom line is that most Americans are going to see it as that they are too afraid to take questions from every day Americans. They have a point too, and good reason to feel that way. The Republican candidates are stuck between trying to distance themselves from Bush and still be in line with the GOP at the same time. That doesn't leave much wiggle room in pointed questions from the person on the street. They'll try to spin it as it not being dignified enough, hoping they can make the Dems look frivilous for doing it, but that won't work either. Then there will be those who will try and compare it to the Dems refusing to debate on FOX, though the two situations/reasons are nothing at all alike. I think they're screwed if they do and screwed if they don't. They probably had to choose between which choice would do less damage to them overall.
The You Tube Debate is the most talked about debate so far, and their refusal, if they do refuse, will not just fade away quietly as they probably hope it will.

No, it is just a plain stupid way of debating. Too much time is wasted on emotionally based, poorly thought out questions that are not even questions but instead statements of belief. You know, kind of like here. Could you imagine the lunacy of the Yahoo Answers from politics people trying to debate something when everyone's minds are already made up?

It's not about being afraid, it's about the dignity of the highest public office in this country. CNN picked the dumbest people to ask the questions. I couldn't believe how unprofessional and idiotic CNN made our country look.
But here's a better question. Why are the Dems afraid to do a single debate on FOX news?????? The Republicans have been on CNN a couple times. Why won't the Dems come on FOX???
You do know that FOX news attracts more viewers than CNN. It seems that would be the only smart thing to do.

The format isn't the problem, its the fact that the entire YouTube debate was set up to make the Democrats look appealing to the YouTube crowd. The same way it was used to make Democrats look good will be the same way its used to make Republicans look bad...
Just look at the "gun control issue" question... they took the craziest video posted, and showed that question to America, just to make gun owners look crazy. Obviously a man who's willing to tell the whole world he considers a gun his "baby" isn't the type of person we want to own guns... everyone can agree with that, regardless of your party. But to show him as the only person interested in relaxing gun control was very biased and slanted against gun owners, so this is why the Republicans are worried (come on, "afraid" is a loaded word) worried about the deabte. They know they're walking into a trap.

They are afraid that they will have to tell some kind of truth to some question that actually has relevence and not some corporate media drivel by Wolf Blitzer thrown at them with puff balls. They are trying to hide from the American people because they know that the American people are on to their corrupt B.S.

I thought the debate was awesome! Finally real answers (well as real as they can get in politics) from real people.
The Republicans are afraid because they are actually going to have to interact with the American public and talk about the good of people which they have no practice in doing.
P.S.--Some of the questions from the Democratic debate were specifically intended to "lighten the mood"....maybe you should take lessons.

Becouse you tube will only be watched by the ones who collect star wars, and star trek figures.

May be a sense of personal dignity, both for themselves and the office they are seeking. Answering questions from an animated snowman isn't that far removed from participating in a debate moderated by Homer Simpson.

I don't know about Republicans but I thought some of the questions CNN decided to air were downright stupid. I want to hear real substance from candidates, not "tell me something that you like and something you don't like about the candidate to your left"
Puhleeze, I would avoid another debate like that regardless of my party...
