I just moved from a small town college atmosphere to a suburb in a larger city (where I grew up). I am having trouble establishing a social life, although I do have one at work, as I work retail but I don't hang out with people at work. I had friends from college but I went to an out-of-state college and almost all of them are elsewhere. I had a few good friends in high school but most of them are gone as well.

Any tips for a non-drinker and non-concert goer to establishing a social life? What are some things I can do to keep myself busy?

I'd try volunteer work. Look for projects where you meet a large number of other volunteers, like Habitat for Humanity or picking up trash at a local lake/stream/body of water. You'll meet nice people, and the projects often take a day or less on a weekend. I'd also try synagogue: try different services and different temples to see if one attracts younger people: I made a ton of friends that way. If you're looking for connections to advance your career, try different meetings of Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions and Toastmasters. The people will be older but they'll be the leaders of their community, and you can find a lot of job leads that way.

What are some of your hobbies? Join a group or team (hiking, basketball, biking, etc.). Try a class through the city or a community college in something that interests you (art, photography, sports). Join a gym, one that is crowded often. Just do what you enjoy doing and you'll find other people in time.

I am not much in the social life but look in your local paper for community events. There are usually festivals and fund raisers and such going on, you can have fun and meet people. You could always volunteer your spare time (sometimes hospitals need volunteers)
