Not only did the merchants find that seeing something priced at 99 cents increased sales, before cash registrars where computerized and digital, they found that pricing items at 98 and 99 cents kept the clerks honest because they couldn't during the course of the day keep track of all the odd cents, and pocket an even dollar or more.

But, it's got everything to do with marketing.
People are and have been mesmerized with the ending .99 on a sale price. We expect to see it !
Which one looks more normal :-
$12.00 OR
$12.99 ?

yeah I agree... as a daily consumer in the USA I would SOOOOOO rather pay 29.99 than 30 bucks. When I hear things rounded off I just flip out and go crazy. Forget having those even rounded numbers.

Because if $9.99, psychologically people think think that is it less than $10 even though it is only $.01 less.
