He's never said anything to me but he stares at me if we pass in the hallway and I try not to look. I don't look down but right past him. He knows which apt I live in cuz he's seen me go in. He's beyond creepy and I get horriable vibes from him. I don't know if I've watched too much law and order and csi and I've become paranoid but my gut is telling me there isn't something right about this guy. I don't want to live in fear everytime I come home or when I'm at home. I have 3 locks, 2 for when I'm inside and one that I lock when I leave. I work pt until midnight a few times a week so I have no choice but to arrive home late (i take a cab). What precautions can I take for when I'm at home or coming home and if I see him? Living alone I should probably do these things anyways so what do you suggest?

Trust your instincts ! Always have your keys in one hand and keep your cell phone in the other hand. Stop avoiding looking at him, that marks you as someone who could be easily attacked.

Go to a home improvement center and buy a security monitor system, they aren't very expensive. You can install it easily so you don't have to open your door unless its someone you know. Take some time while you are there and look around at all their security stuff and you can also purchase a metal bar type thing that braces against the door (and the floor) that will prevent your door from being kicked in when you are inside the apartment.

Finally I suggest you google for "sexual predators registration website" for your state. You can then search for your street and see if he is on the list.

Trust your gut - if this guy creeps you out then there's a reason for it.
It's probably impractical but is there a guy you work with that you can trust who would see you home to your door? If not, get a couple of cans of mace or pepper spray. Use one to practice with - just make sure the wind is blowing away from you and anyone around you, so you don't make yourself or someone else sick. Keep the other can of mace ready and in your hand when you go into your apartment.
Always have your apartment key ready to go in the door lock when you exit the cab - don't fumble with the keys at your door.
Get to know another neighbor on your floor who lives close to you - preferably one who is already home when you are coming home late. A person who knows you will be more likely to help.
Don't assume that the creepy guy would only attack you at midnight - few people are home during the day, so that's another likely time because there is less risk of running into someone in the hall or having someone hear a commotion.

As far as living alone - some good things to do are to make sure you have a functioning dead bolt on your door - use it and don't assume that because it's daylight that you can leave it unlocked - if you are home the door needs to be locked.
Check the locks on your windows and use them! If you want to leave your windows open during the day while you are home - get a piece of wood to put between the top of the window and top sill - so that the window can only be opened just so far. That way if someone tries to get in then they will have to break the window and you will hear it.
Never ever leave your windows open at night!!! Invest in a small window air conditioner if you have to but never leave them open.
Get some self defense training - you don't need to be a kung fo master to cause someone pain enough to get away from them. Some gyms and community centers offer courses.
If you are attacked - get away anyway you can and run to a previously designated safe spot. Don't worry about fighting back or trying to not really hurt the attacker - you have every right to defend yourself - poke in the eyes, jab at the throat, slam your heel on an instep, kick a knee or thigh from the side, jam the heel of your hand up a nose, use the mace (try to remember to hold your own breath though when you use it!).
Finally, a dog is a great defense, too if you can have one...

Good luck - you'll be fine, just keep your eyes open and trust your gut!

Be really careful...I once rented an apartment,
and as apartments do occasionally, need repairs
mine did. I asked the maintenance man over to fix something in my apartment. I made the mistake of letting him in. Luckily, my male neighbors where right outside my door. (My door opened to the street). He gave me the creeps the whole time he was there. He didn't fix the problem and ended up leaving. Next day, I called the repairs into the management office and another maintenance man showed up. I told him of the creepy maintenance man.

Come to find out the first guy was a convicted Rapist.

I never let that one in my apartment again.

Your feeling may be right - you shouldn't take any chances.
Awareness is the best defense.
Check your locks
When you come home, keep your keys in your fist with a few poking thru between your fingers like spikes. If someone attacks you - go for the eyes.
You may also want to carry pepper spray.

No matter what - you need to remember that being creepy isn't a crime and that the police are very limited in what they can do - .
So you need to do what you need to in order to prortect yourself

Are there other people on your floor that you talk to? Maybe have them watch out for you, or tell them that he is creeping you out so if you come banging on their door after midnight it is a signal to call the police. Also, get one of those little hand-held alarms that you can pull the pin out so it goes off loudly. It will alert others in the building that something is wrong. They have alarms that you can attach to the door jam and there is an on/off switch. When you are home have it turned on.

Mace. Get another lock on that door as well.

Locks on windows as well (fire escapes can be access in). A basic motion sensor from home dept will alert you if someone enters you apartment.

thats a sucky situation your in but i think that if you see him in the hallway and you no that hes still out there you should go inside and say "Honey im home" or something like that it may sound stupid but it just might scare him off.

I suggest carry a little pocket knife in your purse or pocket and have it concealed in your hand while walking to your apartment. just in case he tries anything you will have something to protect yourself with. And if you choose talk to your landlord or whom ever is in charge and try to find out something about him.
