I have an older PC.I currently have an AMD athlon XP 1800+ 1.53 Ghz.I think i would like to stay within the Athlon XP series just to be sure it will be compatible. How much higher a Athlon XP would i need to notice the difference. (not trying to spend to much)

Your CPU is running a 266FSB & the fastest XP CPU you can upgrade to is an XP 2600(2.13GHz)AX2600DMT3C CPU. They are quite rare though & may need to settle for an XP 2400(2.0GHz)AX2400DMT3C Your motherboard should support it but check before buying.

After doing the a brief search, the fastest you could go to would be either a 2600+ or 2800+, I would need to know your motherboard to be exactly sure how high you would go. Either way, I would recommend against it, you would get a slight gain, but on a scale of 1-10 it would be like going from a 3 to a 3.5, not really worth it. Plus you are going to have trouble finding one, because they are very old, which means you will either have to by a used one on eBay, or if you buy it new you will pay more than its worth because they are in short supply. If you are interested, you could probably upgrade your motherboard, CPU, and RAM for about $250, which would be a much much better option. Either way, I can help you out further finding a CPU for your current board or a the replacements I mentioned, contact me via IM.

NOT WORTH UPGRADING
Just get a new cheap computer, it will be a lot faster and saves you the time and hassle of upgrading. And you will have a hard time finding an athlon xp chip

Check the specs of your motherboard, as you may have the fastest Processor it can handle.
If you have to get a new motherboard too, you have to buy new memory too. Also, make sure you current hardware is compatilble with the new motherboard.

depends on what you do with your pc. if you surf the net, and use it for just basic use, you won't notice a difference.
if you play games, or render, then you will notice the difference with a good 400mhz leap, but the more the better
HOWEVER, you must make sure your motherboard will support the upgrade

Do you even know if your motherboard can handle anything faster?
I don't think you will see much difference no matter how high you go. Unless you can speed up your FSB.
